Chromium

What is the best chromium dosage for diabetes?

Trials showing benefit for HbA1c and fasting glucose have generally used 200-1000mcg per day, well above what typical diets provide.

Chromium picolinate is the form most often used in the trials behind its "level 1" evidence rating for blood sugar.

The short answer

A Canadian Family Physician review singled out chromium as having "level 1" evidence among complementary interventions for type 2 diabetes, improving HbA1c and fasting glucose in the trials reviewed. Those studies generally used 200-1000mcg per day, in the chromium picolinate form most often tested. Food sources like broccoli, whole grains, and nuts contain chromium but fall well below trial doses, so a supplement is the practical route if this is being considered. Because chromium can lower blood sugar meaningfully, anyone on insulin or other glucose-lowering medication should monitor closely and loop in a prescriber first.
