Asteraceae, also called Compositae, is one of the largest plant families in the world, with more than 25,000 species -- including ragweed, chamomile, calendula, arnica, chrysanthemum, dandelion, yarrow, feverfew, echinacea, and sunflower. For most people, that shared family membership is trivia. For anyone with a known allergy to one of these plants, it is a genuine reason to be cautious with the others.
Why cross-reactivity happens
The main allergens responsible are a group of compounds called sesquiterpene lactones, found in the leaf, stem, and flower oleoresin of many Asteraceae plants, and in their pollen. Because related species share similar sesquiterpene lactone structures, a person sensitized to one plant in the family often reacts to others -- this is called cross-sensitization, and dermatology references describe it as common within this family.
Who this matters most for
Anyone with a known ragweed or other seasonal pollen allergy, a history of reacting to chamomile tea or products, or a prior skin reaction to a daisy-family flower has real reason for caution before trying a new Asteraceae-family botanical -- calendula, arnica, chamomile, yarrow, and feverfew among them. Compositae contact allergy also tends to affect middle-aged and older adults more, and often shows up as dermatitis on sun-exposed skin, since flower and pollen contact often coincides with outdoor exposure.
What this means in practice
Patch test any new Asteraceae-family topical product before wider use, following the standard method. If a reaction has occurred with one plant in this family before, treat other family members as a real, not hypothetical, risk rather than assuming each new product is unrelated.
