Buttercup: A Toxin That Only Exists Once the Plant Is Damaged

Buttercup flowers look harmless, but crushed or bruised leaves release a real skin irritant -- one that has caused documented cases of blistering severe enough to be mistaken for burns in emergency rooms.

Buttercup's toxin doesn't exist in the intact plant -- it forms only once a leaf or stem is crushed or bruised, which is why casual, gentle contact rarely causes a problem.

Buttercups (Ranunculus species) are common wildflowers, easily recognized by their glossy yellow petals -- and generally harmless to brush past. The irritation risk comes specifically from damaged plant material: crushed, bruised, or chewed leaves and stems release a genuine skin irritant capable of causing real blistering.

The toxin doesn't exist until the plant is damaged

Every buttercup contains ranunculin, a glycoside that is, on its own, essentially inert. It only becomes a problem when the plant is crushed or bruised: enzymes released by the damaged tissue convert ranunculin into protoanemonin, a volatile, acrid oil that is genuinely irritating to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Protoanemonin works by binding to sulfhydryl groups and disrupting disulfide bonds in skin proteins, which damages the structure of the skin and can lead to fluid-filled blisters. This is a real chemical effect, not simply an allergic sensitivity -- which is part of why documented cases have looked severe enough to be initially treated as burns.

Fresh spring growth is the highest-risk period

Protoanemonin content is highest in fresh, actively growing buttercup during spring bloom, and it declines as the plant matures and dries out -- protoanemonin itself breaks down further into an essentially harmless compound as the plant dries. This means dried or dead buttercup material poses very little risk, while handling and crushing fresh spring leaves and stems carries the real exposure risk.

What contact typically causes

Reactions typically develop within about an hour of contact with damaged plant material, presenting as burning, itching, redness, and blistering at the contact site. Chewing on the plant can cause blisters on the lips and mouth, and the irritant oil is also genuinely irritating if it reaches the eyes. Swallowing any part of the plant can cause significant gastrointestinal irritation.

What helps

Wash the affected area promptly with soap and water to remove any remaining plant oil, and avoid further crushing or handling fresh plant material bare-handed if working around buttercup regularly. A cool compress can ease burning and discomfort while the skin recovers. Because reactions can genuinely resemble a burn, blistering that is extensive, involves the eyes, or doesn't start improving warrants medical evaluation rather than assuming it will resolve on its own.
