How to Verify a Natural Supplement: Labs, Certificates of Analysis, and Real Red Flags

Dietary supplements aren't reviewed by the FDA before they reach shelves. A Certificate of Analysis is the actual proof of what's in the bottle -- here's how to read one.

Dietary supplements in the United States are regulated as a category of food, not as drugs, and do not go through FDA pre-market review the way pharmaceuticals do. That regulatory gap is exactly why independent, third-party testing matters: it's the only objective verification that a supplement contains what the label claims, at the amount claimed, without concerning levels of contamination.

What a Certificate of Analysis actually verifies

A Certificate of Analysis, or COA, is a per-batch laboratory report covering three core areas: identity (is the ingredient actually what the label says it is), potency (is the labeled amount actually present, not more or less), and purity (is the product free of contaminants above established limits). This distinction matters because supplement mislabeling is a documented, real problem -- one widely cited investigation found that four out of five herbal products pulled from major retail shelves didn't contain any detectable trace of the herb listed on the label.

What contamination testing actually covers

A meaningful COA screens for heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, typically measured against USP or California Proposition 65 limits), microbial contamination (bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella, plus yeast and mold counts), and pesticide residues, including glyphosate specifically. This isn't a theoretical concern: independently published testing data has found measurable lead in the large majority of tested greens powders, lead specifically in a meaningful share of turmeric samples (often from lead chromate used to enhance color), and detectable heavy metals in roughly three out of four tested protein powders. Botanical products -- mushroom extracts, herbal powders, greens blends -- and animal-derived ingredients like collagen and fish oil carry a higher baseline microbial testing burden than synthetic compounds, making microbial screening especially relevant for those categories.

Recognized third-party certification marks

NSF International certifies products against the NSF/ANSI 173 standard, testing for contaminants, label accuracy, and manufacturing-practice compliance, with a separate NSF Certified for Sport program that additionally screens for banned substances. USP Verified, from the U.S. Pharmacopeia, confirms identity, potency, and purity along with good manufacturing practice compliance. ConsumerLab operates differently from a certification mark: it purchases products off the shelf like an ordinary consumer, tests them independently, and publishes results regardless of brand involvement or payment -- functioning more like an independent consumer report than a pass/fail seal, and a brand appearing repeatedly on its approved list across multiple products and years is a meaningful signal on its own.

Certification applies to a batch, not a brand

Third-party certification is granted per product formulation and batch, not company-wide -- a brand can have one certified product line and several uncertified ones. Checking for the specific certification mark on the specific product and lot in hand, rather than trusting a brand's general reputation, is the more reliable practice.
