Handling spring bulbs can irritate skin for genuinely different reasons -- tulip fingers is a real allergy that builds over repeated exposure, while daffodil and hyacinth itch come from sharp mineral crystals causing mechanical damage. Why the distinction matters.

Gardeners and florists who handle tulip, daffodil, or hyacinth bulbs sometimes end up with red, itchy, cracked skin on their fingers -- but these three familiar bulbs cause irritation through genuinely different mechanisms. Tulip fingers is a true allergy that gets worse the more you're exposed. Daffodil and hyacinth itch are mostly mechanical, caused by sharp mineral crystals, and don't require any prior sensitization at all.
Tulip fingers: a real, building allergy
Tulip bulbs contain a compound called tuliposide A, concentrated in the outer layers of the bulb, which converts to tulipalin A on the skin. Tulipalin A is a genuine allergic sensitizer -- it can trigger the immune system to develop an allergy after repeated contact, similar in principle to how urushiol sensitizes people to poison ivy over time. This is why occasional home gardeners planting a few bulbs rarely have trouble, while florists and bulb-industry workers handling large volumes for weeks at a stretch commonly develop it, with symptoms typically worsening on each subsequent exposure once sensitized. The rash centers on the fingertips and around the nails, sometimes with brittle or deformed nails in long-standing cases.
Daffodil and hyacinth itch: mostly mechanical, not allergic
Daffodil and hyacinth bulbs contain calcium oxalate crystals -- needle-shaped structures called raphides that make up a meaningful share of the bulb's composition. Handling the outer bulb layer (the tecta) breaks it into small, sharp particles that release these crystal needles, which cause direct mechanical irritation to skin on contact -- essentially tiny punctures, similar in principle to fiberglass irritation, rather than an immune reaction. Daffodil bulbs additionally contain alkaloids, including lycorine, that can add a chemical-irritant component. Because this is primarily mechanical and chemical irritation rather than an allergy, it does not require prior sensitization -- even a first-time handler with no previous bulb exposure can react, and the reaction is generally described as self-limiting rather than progressively worsening.
The crystals can become airborne
A detail worth knowing: the calcium oxalate crystals released from daffodil and hyacinth bulbs can become airborne during handling, particularly in settings with heavy bulb processing. This means reactions aren't always confined to the hands -- exposed skin on the face, neck, or forearms can be affected too, especially if dust settles on clothing and later contacts skin.
What actually helps
Gloves are the single most effective prevention for all three -- nitrile is generally recommended over latex for tulip handling specifically. Washing hands promptly after handling any of these bulbs helps limit ongoing irritation. Because the tulip reaction is a genuine allergy, someone who has developed sensitization should expect continued reactions on future tulip contact and may want to avoid repeated handling altogether; daffodil and hyacinth reactions, being primarily irritant rather than allergic, are more likely to improve simply by reducing direct exposure and are less likely to worsen with each encounter. A cool compress can ease discomfort from any of the three while the skin heals.
