Why people use it
Brazil nuts are the one reliably selenium-rich plant food, but individual nuts vary so enormously in selenium content that a casual daily handful habit is a genuine, documented route to selenium toxicity, not just a theoretical concern.

- ✓Antioxidant enzyme (glutathione peroxidase) cofactor support

What the evidence says
This is a nutrient where the food-variability problem is unusually well quantified: peer-reviewed laboratory analysis has directly measured selenium content across individual Brazil nuts and found an enormous range, and a randomized controlled trial has directly compared Brazil nut butter to a standard supplement in vegans specifically.

Safety note
Know before you use it
NIH explicitly warns that Brazil nuts' high selenium content could cause selenium toxicity (selenosis) if consumed regularly in more than small amounts -- early signs include a garlic odor on the breath and a metallic taste, with more advanced signs including hair loss and brittle or lost nails. Because individual-nut selenium content is so unpredictable, treating a "handful of Brazil nuts a day" as a reliably safe habit is not well supported by the actual variability data; occasional consumption, or a standardized supplement or nut butter product with tested selenium content, is a more predictable approach. Anyone already taking a selenium-containing supplement or multivitamin should account for that when estimating total intake from nuts.
