Is raw shilajit safe?

No -- raw, unpurified shilajit can contain lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and mycotoxins from its geological formation, and should never be consumed.

The short answer

Shilajit's Ayurvedic tradition has always required a purification process (shodhana) before use, precisely because the raw resin can contain heavy metals and mycotoxins picked up during its geological formation -- this isn't a modern safety add-on, it's a recognition built into the traditional practice itself. Traditional shodhana dissolves the resin in a Triphala decoction and filters it repeatedly, but that process does not reliably remove dissolved heavy metal ions, which require modern lab testing (ICP-MS) to even detect. Boiling doesn't help either, since heavy metals are elements, not organisms that can be killed by heat. The only responsible approach is a product with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis testing for lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium -- "purified" on a label alone is not a regulated or verified claim.
