What is the difference between common juniper and savin juniper?

Common juniper (Juniperus communis) is the classic culinary and traditional European herbal species; savin juniper (Juniperus sabina) is not a culinary substitute and has a toxic reproductive history.

The short answer

Common juniper, Juniperus communis, is the classic culinary and traditional European herbal species, identified by sharp needles in whorls of three and blue-black waxy cones. Savin juniper, Juniperus sabina, is not a culinary substitute and has a toxic reproductive history associated with its essential-oil chemistry, including sabinyl acetate. Do not forage or use savin juniper for food or medicine -- species identity changes risk, and blue fruit color alone is never enough to confirm a safe juniper.
