Is barley gluten-free?
No. Barley naturally contains gluten and is not suitable for a gluten-free diet used to manage celiac disease.

The short answer
FDA and NIDDK identify barley, wheat and rye as gluten-containing grains. Ordinary hulled, pearled, flaked, malted and flour forms of barley should not be assumed gluten-free. Read packaged-food labels carefully, including products containing malt or barley-derived ingredients.
